Gameplay

The gameplay is blocky, unrealistic and just plain awkward. I hit a zombie with a massive, massive hammer which has good stats and a nano second later (literally) it's on top of me and I have to fight it off? No. Oh wait, I can't fight it off anyway, and yep...now I'm dead. I aim and go to hit a zombie, or better yet shoot someone, I'm completely on target, I miss. In some circumstances infact I have swung at a zombie, and somehow even though its right infront of me, completely missed and the zombie then also somehow transported THROUGH my body and is now behind me. Fucking great. Too blocky, melee combat is crap and it's been rushed. Also how a zombie can literally be in my face from being around 2 metres away from me in again, a nano second is beyond me. Ridiculous. The fast zombies, granted. The normal ones? Ridiculous.

Minimap

The minimap leaves a lot to be desired. Firstly its black...no detail, no dirt roads or buildings, just a circular blank canvas. Great, so if I'm walking or better yet driving and need to see the road I'm on and the turns involved there's no hope. Secondly and more importantly, when you're doing a quest and it shows you a dotted line of where to go, most of the time IT'S FUCKING WRONG. The amount of times its tried to make me walk through a fucking mountain to get my quest objective, or tells me to go one way, I get a certain way there, then it flips out and tells me I actually need to go the other way. Literally infuriating. This is one of the worst parts. I ended up having to set a waypoint about 4 times before I actually finally reached my destination, the in game routing is absolutely awful.

Driving

If you're going to introduce the ability to drive cars into a game, take the time and do it properly. Don't make it so I can't turn to wheel sharp enough at times, I can't see SHIT when I'm driving along because the window is so small, and also make obstacles in the environment either real or not. The amount of times I've gone to drive through a bush and instead crashed into it LIKE IT'S FUCKING CONCRETE. Seriously, this gets really annoying, added to by the fact that sometimes you can drive through lamp posts like they weren't even there? Again - just ridiculous and stupid and obviously rushed.

Escort Missions

Escort missions are an absolute ball-ache, and my my, there's a few. The person you are following can't seem to walk or run at the same speed as you, so half the time you end up stop-starting just to stay with them. Then there comes being attacked whilst on an escort mission. Whilst you are stationary or walking slowly you will sometimes see a group of zombies, this group will then obviously latch onto you and start following you, your escort simply carries on like it's a sunny Sunday afternoon. They walk at a leisurely pace whilst YOU get absolutely swarmed by zombies...then they just carry on walking. You try to fight off the zombies that are there (because your escort didn't have the intelligence to notice there is a horde of zombies on your arse) and have a hard time doing it - whilst your "escort" carries on ahead of you. They don't stop to help and the dialogue continues. So, so irritating. Oh and also - when the zombies aren't there, the escort generally decides they are and runs off ahead of you. Great. Either the developers are hinting at the fact that people who need your help have the same amount of braincells as a turd or again - they didn't take enough time with this game.

The most disappointing part...The original trailer

If you're an avid gamer, you've seen the trailer for Dead Island, and wow it was a corker. This is the most disappointing part for myself as I imagined a new-wave, different, interesting and intelligent zombie game from Dead Island, and instead I was met with a borderlands/ressy 5 mashup that was rushed, incomplete and bug ridden, which doesn't reflect well by today's standards. Sorry Dead Island, you're just a waste of time and a waste of patience and I wish I'd bought Deus Ex instead.

NOTE: I traded this in so I can buy Arkham City next month. A wise decision.
